Michael Vick scandal: Five years later

In April 2007, the news about Michael Vick’s involvement in an illegal dog-fighting operation broke. Bad Newz Kennels was named after the town where Vick and his entourage were raised — Newport News, Virginia — a hardscrabble community across the bay from the Norfolk shipyards.

What began as a highly publicized scandal about the bad choices and cruel behavior of Michael Vick, then one of the highest paid stars in the NFL, ultimately became a scandal about the NFL. After serving time in federal prison, Vick — who confessed to body slamming, electrocuting, drowning and strangling dogs to death — was permitted to return to the privileged ranks of the NFL and a national stage. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fight venture. He served 18 of a 23-month sentence.

Vick’s signing by the Philadelphia Eagles precipitated an avalanche of controversy that was only made worse by President Obama calling Vick and wishing him well, as Vick had paid his dues to society. This was a questionable assessment as Vick was never tried on animal cruelty charges under Virginia law.

There’s a bigger story here, though. That’s the story of the effect this case has had on how canine victims of fighting rings are perceived and, more importantly, how they are treated following a bust.

The notoriety of this case served as a large stage on which to demonstrate once and for all that dogs who have been press-ganged into servitude in dog-fighting rings are not damaged goods, as so many in the media and even many in mainstream animal welfare organizations have long proclaimed.

They are just dogs.

I am so proud of the work Best Friends has done in this regard. Twenty-two of the hardest-case dogs from the Bad Newz Kennels came to Best Friends as a result of the decision by federally appointed Guardian/Special Master Rebecca Huss, a law professor at Valparaiso University School of Law.

The rehabilitation of the Vicktory Dogs, as they came to be known, proved to the world that there is a future for dogs who are victims of cruelty — even the most hardcore cases. Best Friends’ efforts with the Vicktory Dogs have bolstered the work being undertaken around the country on behalf of pit-bull-type dogs.

Here are a few of the high points:

  • Because of the Vicktory Dogs, numerous dogs seized in fighting busts have been saved, including the majority from the Missouri 500, such as Joy who still resides at the Sanctuary.
  • The Vicktory Dogs case was instrumental in getting the American Bar Association to adopt a resolution calling for the humane treatment, evaluation, and proper placement of all animal victims of cruelty, including fight-bust dogs.
  • And the Vicktory Dogs’ success was crucial to Best Friends’ successful drive in 2011 to lobby Florida to repeal the designation of all dogs and puppies seized in fighting busts as “dangerous.” Now these victims of cruelty can be evaluated and adopted out, not summarily killed.

The Vicktory Dogs are pioneers in the fight against canine profiling, and each of these individual dogs — from Georgia, to Oliver, to Little Red, to Lucas — has caused a paradigm shift and helped save countless lives. These are truly America’s dogs, and today we celebrate a critical anniversary in our history and relationship to dogs.

Love the blog and thanks for noting the five-year anniversary of truly a miracle story of compassion towards innocent dogs who were unlucky enough to be caught up on the horrors of dog fighting.  This miracle story needs to be told over and over again and is a perfect example to kids of what kind of adults kids should try to grow up to be, adults with compassion and integrity for the vulnerable, innocent animals who cannot protect or speak up for themselves.  I know I sound like a broken record but I don’t care.  The people who fought to save, help and adopt these surviving victims of dog fighting and the resilient dogs themselves who still love people after what they went through need to be celebrated daily.  Truly a story of hope and compassion for innocent dogs and a great example to kids of what adults should be like.  Thanks again for noting this anniversary and reminding us to never forget these amazing people and dogs and all the unnamed victims of dog fighting that have suffered and died and will in the future due to this nightmarish illegal activity and to keep pushing to get more dog fighters, people who attend and gamble and breed these dogs for dog fighting in jail as much as possible so that more dogs can be spared the hell of dog fighting.

Viick, Osama, the NFL and the media from the CEO’s to the announsers and advertizers should all have to make a one hour commercial in prime time about these fighting rings and the treatment of these poor victims of severe abuse. Vick got off because people love celebs, yes they always get a slap on the wrist so the fans can see them so the advertisers make them millions in endorsement so people got to have the fix they need when in reality most all of them could care less about you or your kids you are trying to get an autograph for. Then we make the lawyers rich pleeing all the cases  because everyone has so much to lose. Only the dogs suffer , the rest laugh all the way to the bank.

  • Kcampbellvegas

I’m so glad many of the dogs were rehabilitated. Now what do we do with that animal, Michael Vick?

  • Pcahill1313

God bless the people who worked so hard on behalf of these dogs!  I will never, ever forget or forgive Michael Vick and his ilk for the unspeakable cruelty that these and other dogs suffered. . . My sweet pit bull mix, Dakota, is the most affectionate dogs that I’ve had!  Best Friends has worked to make a horrible situation a success story!  From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your dedication and hard work!

  • Lynncycle

Thanks so much for helping these dogs and in doing so, helping many others to come!

  • jbandk9s

God bless Ms Huss, that judge and Best Friends for showing the world what can happen when the victims of dog fights get the support they need. And here is another result of the Vick story. It brought Best Friends to my attention for the first time. Had to see for myself. Flew out to volunteer, took my daughter along. We fell in love with pitties. Adopted one from a local rescue. Now starting to work with other volunteers to reduce kill rates (all bullies!) at our local animal control. Bet many were literally disgusted into action, so some good can come from evil.

  • Sunnybun8

Thank you Best Friends, you are all truly angels here on earth!

  • Katbrown88

Michael Vick will get his. He is a pathetic man. His weak attempts to convince us he is a changed man do not cut it. But these dogs are the heroes. How can anyone see their recovery and still believe their breed should be singled out for discrimination and elimination is beyond me. Stupid is incurable I guess. Bravo to all for having homes and to all of you who love them. No animal deserves to be treated the way they were.

  • Donna Lee

Best Friends, you rock!  What Michael Vick did is unforgiveable.  Thank you for saving these beautiful dogs.

Definitely an anniversary worth remembering. The Victory Dogs and the progress they have made since the initial seizure is awesome. They have proven what places such as Best Friends had been saying for a long time – no animal is inherently vicious. They, just as humans, are largely a product of the way they are treated and that is a lesson we all should learn. These dogs have shown it again in their lives.

We still have a long way to go as a society in realizing that animal cruelty is something that needs to be treated seriously by our legal system and until all of us realize that the animals who are part of our society are as entitled to good, healthy, happy lives as are humans.

  • Debshvn_1996

Why wasn’t he ever taken out?!! I would love to body slam, electrocute, drown and strangle him to death!! I’m sure some of you would help me too!!

  • ghack 13

I am very happy that so many of the dogs have made great progress under the loveing care of BFAS and other devoted rescue. As for Michael Vick, who hasn’t been punished enough, karma will take care of him.

  • DianeLee

The work of BF with the Vicktory dogs is another great example of BF’s application of compassion, commitment and leadership to a project that changed feelings, actions and thoughts beyond the boundaries of the sanctuary.

  • Molly

Excellent blog!  May all the Vicktory Dogs each receive their own vicktory in life.  I choose not to comment on Michael Vick.  Divine justice will take care of him.

  • Jcromeenes

I want to win the lottery so I can donate million$ to Best Friends and move there and volunteer until my final days. There are not enough kind words to truly describe all the good Best Friends has done and continues to do. It’s been TOO LONG since my last visit. That needs to change this summer!

I’ve read the book, listened to and read articles and as far as I’m concerned…….. I can’t ever forgive Vick for what he did. Thank you Best Friends for giving the dogs time, love and training to enter the world of loving people.

  • http://reganwood.com/ ReganWoodPhotography

It’s been five years since Michael Vick was convicted and it repulses me to think that a man that confessed to strangling, drowning and electrocuting his dogs with his own two hands gets paid millions to play pro ball and get cheered on by millions.

Totally agree with you.  Best Friends just warms my heart.

Scott76julie74 is exactly right!  Everyone should be thanking Best Friends, but also Judge Henry Hudson who was willing to listen and give these dogs a well-deserved second chance.  Michael Vick and the NFL and, sadly, in this instance, President Obama should be ashamed of their actions and opinions concerning this situation.

Unfortunately, everthing in Animal Humane Welfare progresses in baby steps.  As long as we go forward we should be grateful.  Each “Vicktory” situation with outcomes such as the Vicktory Dogs takes us one step closer to the majority of our population understanding animal-human relationships.  Thank goodness Best Friends has the resources, talent and patience to rehabilitate the animals that enter their care and the world wide recognition of their expertise that gains respect from the people responsible for passing and enforcing laws.  Most of us will agree that Michael Vick did not suffer enough, but in reality, he received a greater punishment than those who commit cruel acts against animals in our local areas.  Most, if they are ever prosecuted are treated as misdemeanors.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lisaspups Lisa Wallace

Kudos to all those in law enforcement and the rescue community that fought for these beautiful animals.  I am disappointed, nowever, that there are those who choose to use it as a platform for political bias.

  • Anniebode32

Michael Vick is a despicable cruel heartless man. He never felt remorse he was just sorry he was caught.

  • Dennis Lubrano

With all the money he is now making and awards he is receiving, I wonder just what the total amount of monies he has donated to helping animals? Certainly not enough I am certain. And rather than help animals in need monetarily he wants to have more dogs? Because of his barbaric misdeeds animals are being helped and laws are being passed. Ironic no matter what sports figures/celebrities/politicians  do wrong it never seems to tarnish their reputations. Guess we’ll leave this one up to KARMA!

  • Mfox

You will never convince me that anyone who can strangle or electrocute any living creature can say ‘sorry’ and expect that anyone would ever buy this apology as real. Yet Wayne Pascal, Obama and others did so..either naive or political. MIchael Vick is a sadistic sociopath…then and now.

  • Sick of Vick!

Justice would have been served if Michael Vick had to endure the same torture and cruelty he gave those poor, helpless dogs.  Shame, shame, shame on him!  He hasn’t nearly paid enough for his crimes!  In my eyes, he’s just like Hitler!

  • JJ

The lesson I’ve learned from the Vick dogs?  Forgiveness.   It doesn’t  matter to them what did or did not happen to their former owner.  They don’t care that he is a celebrated athlete.  He doesn’t even figure in their lives at all.   They are better souls than I’ll ever be….but I can follow their example and celebrate where they are now, and not let hate or evil tarnish me. M. Vick is not mine to judge or worry about. I will not give him the power to cloud my life.  Oscar the Victory Dog passed his Canine Good Citizenship today.  That is his way of marking his 5 year anniversary.  And that is what I’m celebrating.

  • Dan Phair

I have always maintained that, dogs are dogs, possibly over simplified, but, I have never met a mean dog with a nice owner, and, visa–versa! The problem lies with the owners, not the dogs.

  • Shameonvic

Victory for the animals and shame on Vick.  What a terrible example for our youth that there have been little consequence for actions of such a public figure.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Grace-Caine/100003684987771 Grace Caine

This is the first that I have heard ofÂ
Vicktory Dogs, but that’s awesome that some good came out of these wrongs.  Don’t get me started about the NFL and President Obama (especially the latter).

  • Mydogsnme

Hard to believe its been 5 years already. Thank you Best Friends and everyone who played a part in rehabilitating these dogs, showing them what a dogs life should be like and for changing the perception in general of dogs used for fighting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/video1221 Bob Berke

The sucker deserves to be maimed! I don’t care what he inadvertently did for dogs. a low classed bum will always be a low classed bum- I don’t care how manybucks he has. I’d snuff him out for free! And walk away satisfied and happy. DROP DEAD VICK!  And take whoever hired you with you. What kind of society would idolize dog fighters and child molesters, who should also be dead! Jackson) We are really screwed up as a society!

  • Anniebode32

Oh my that’t right Vick is very sorry. Yeah i don’t think so, He was sorry because he was caught,Believe me only cowards abuse and tourture dogs. Vicks is just bad and will never change, If he  so sorry he should donate to animal charities I
.All animals but be treated with kindness they are not here for our entertainmen.

  • Bdvoll98

An amazing, heart warming story of good triumphing over evil. While Michael Vick may have repaid his debt to society, he can never, ever, ever repay the cost of suffering done to the dogs at his, and his friends, disposal. And that’s what they were to him, disposable. That a life, ANY LIFE, be treated with such disregard is beyond shame. Yet the dogs survived and many now enjoy the lives they deserve. Thanks to Best Friends Animal Society and Professor Huss for their tireless efforts in achieving Vicktory for these loving, lovable animals.

When I visited BFAS in March, I had the opportunity to meet a few of the VICKtory dogs. They are some of the sweetest dogs I have ever met – if I were one of them, I sure as heck would never go near a human ever again. With the help of the staff at BFAS, they’re learning and gaining more strength everyday. Furthermore, as I’m sure many would agree, I absolutely hate the negative stigma placed on pitbulls. They are NOT monsters. Michael Vick should in no way still be in the NFL, it’s disgusting to see how people have treated him as if he did nothing wrong.
