Act now to save lives of Florida dogs

Here’s the issue: Thousands of pit-bull-type dogs have been killed in Miami-Dade County, Florida. They have been killed or banished because of the way they look, not because of the way they behave, and hundreds more are being killed every year.

Currently a bill, HB 997, is in motion at the state level to correct this injustice, but the Miami-Dade county commissioners, the same folks who put the breed ban in place, are trying to stall HB 997 by putting the breed ban on the ballot and trying to make the killing of innocent dogs into a home rule issue, which it is not.

Miami-Dade is the only county in Florida to discriminate against pit-bull-type dogs. Please contact the county commissioners today and remind them that Miami will never become a no-kill community if they continue to kill puppies and dogs simply because of their appearance. This policy and the proposed ballot initiative are a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Marlins pitcher Mark Burehle was not able to take up residence in Miami-Dade County, despite playing for the Miami-based team, because of the appearance of his dog. His short video says it all.

Act now and save lives. The budget subcommittee meeting is tomorrow morning, and the Miami-Dade county commissioners are lobbying to kill the bill.

Pit Bulls have just as much right for life as any other type pet.  Responsible owners know how to care for GODS creations.  If not, then a PB rescue should have the right to save and place these dogs into responsible, loving and caring homes.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this issue.  Poor dogs being persecuted.  It really is a shame that people don’t get the facts about dogs and listen to the hate and hysteria.  These dogs are great in the right hands just like any other dog.  Just have to keep educating people about these dogs and spread compassion and try and stop the hate.

    Stop killing innocent PIT-bulls!

  • Terry

Euthanizing dogs because of their breed just shows your ignorance.  Do a little
research.  Talk to dog trainers and behaviorists.  Talk to people who own pits.
And last, but not least, meet a few pit bulls.  Then you will understand how totally off base your are.  You’re killing innocent dogs.  How can you possibly justify that?
Ten years ago it was Rotties, before that it was Dobermans and before that it was German Shepherds.   Next year it could be Goldens???  Think about how idiotic that sounds.

It is time to get educated!! Pits are no more dangerous than any other breed!! Any dog in the wrong hands can be aggressive!! Your lumping these dogs into a category that was proven WRONG years and years ago!! Time to catch up with the rest of us Florida!!

Pit bulls are great dogs stop being ignorant and killing these dogs! Get to know a pitbull and you will see just how great, loving, loyal, cuddly, big babies they truly are!

  • smarly

Demonizing pitbulls is another example of “blaming the victim.” Because they are loyal, loving dogs, they can be trained by unscrupulous people to fight for the “enjoyment” of sick people. Their basic nature is no more aggressive than any other dog; in fact, in some cases, less. The only dog that ever bit me was a friend’s 13- pound jack russell terrier, and I handled hundreds of dogs and many pitbulls as a shelter volunteer.

    ALL ANIMALS are God’s children!!!!!

Why can’t we focus on euthanizing horrible excuses for people like micheal vick and leave the poor dogs alone!

  • Joandunlavey

county commissioners Miami-Dade County-have you all lost your minds or just plain ingorant.shame on all of youfor killing innocent dogs because of hteir appearance

  • Caseysmom

There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

  • Lucia

This blatant bigoted attitude has got to be stopped. Humans are the ones to blame for violent animals due to their brutal treatment and training. Animals that are loved and cherished rarely become aggressive regardless of the breed.

  • BJ

Ohio’s governor just signed the bill that ends discrimination of animals because of their breeds…pitt, along with labs and all the other “labeled” breeds have now been REMOVED from the dangerous animal list.  Thank God OUR governor knows that dogs are not born bad…it’s the OWNERS that make ANY animal either docile or dangerous!   Also know that animals that have been raised to be mean and/or fight CAN be rehabilitated….many that were rescued already have been and are now with loving forever homes!!   ALL states need to give these misunderstood animals amnesty and quit discriminating!!

  • shari

it sounds like the Nazi’s are behind this!

  • Becky

Some of the kindest dogs I’ve known have been Pit Bulls or Pit mix.  What ignorance there is out there.  We need to get the word out.

  • Sharon

    Who can we contact?

  • FRANCI

Why would anyone want to be responsible for killing innocent dogs?  Stop and think!!!  Do your homework.  Some of the sweetest pits came from Vick’s, and if they can be rehabilitated, any pit can.  Even require instruction from owners of pits, but don’t kill this breed or dogs that look like the breed.  Who knows, this could go as far as boxers before we know it!

As a resident of Florida, I find it distressing that the biggest obstacle to overturning the ban in Miami-Dade County is the media. There have been daily editorials in the Miami Herald dredging up old stories of child maulings by pitbulls and implying that residents will be held hostage in their own homes if the ban is overturned. They paint a scenario of wandering packs of dangerous dogs on the streets, killing everything in their paths. Truthfully, there is more danger from wandering gangs of armed humans on the streets than any kind of animal life. Even the chance of being shot by law enforcement is greater down here than being attacked by a dog. Until we turn to other forms of education instead of naively believing the sensationalist media, there will continue to be needless canine deaths in Miami-Dade.

I wish people would get to know pit bulls.  They just want to please their owner and will do whatever the owner wants them to do.  The capacity for unconditional love that a pit bull has far surpasses any other dog I have ever owned or known.  Pit bulls are humanities gift for love and companionship.  Please don’t destroy them!!  Please don’t believe the media who just wants to sell papers.  Believe the responsible people lucky enough to share there life with a Pit bull. All of Michael Vics dogs were rehabilitated and are either family pets and/or therapy dogs.  Please Miami-Dade county, get to know the pits and understand they are not your enemy the media is.

I recently watched an interview with a news reporter and a vet and this veternarian
says all of his years taking care of dogs the ONLY breed of dog that he has never been biten by is a Pitt Bull.  We as adults teach our children our children “Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover” but that is what you folks are doing. I challenge you to go out meet a few Pitt Bulls and then report back to us. Don’t tell people that Pitt Bulls are mean and vicious without spending any time with them. Ignorance is that tiny spark that will turn into a flame and eventually burn down a city.  Have you really stopped and thought about how faithful and Loyal a Pitt Bull is?  During one of our wars there was a Pitt Bull (not even trained) saved the lives of our troops the Pitt Bull later came known as Sargent Stubby. Sargent Stubby was a decorated Soldier and he recieved a Purple heart (researcch it and read it) Then we have Popsicle the Pitt Bull who was rescued from a trash bag that was found in a freezer in Texas who helped bring down the Biggest Drug Bust that Texas has ever seen ( you could also research that) Then you can research Presidents who have had Pitt Bulls and yes they lived in the White House and NOBODY was ever killed.
I don’t own a Pitt Bull, I am not in a position to. But I can advocate for them. See I was one of those people up until 2 years ago I listened to the Myths and Lies put out there by do gooder groups (PETA) and I was so afraid of Pitt Bulls. One day I said to my husband there has to be a reason everyone wants and loves the Pitt Bull so we went to our local animal shelter and we met some Pitt Bulls and we learned about the Pitt Bull but I haven’t stopped learning and I can tell you one thing that I know from the bottom of my heart they are the most loving and loyal dog and I would trust a baby with a Pitt Bull and know that that baby would be safe.

Great post.  People should not be teaching children to hate an innocent dog or anything else.  These poor dogs are innocent in all of this. Unbelievable cruelty inflicted on innocent dogs.  Unbelievable.  Even if I were attacked by a dog I would know not to blame the whole group.  People should be telling children to learn about dogs from the experts and meet a pit bull.  Gaining knowledge with facts is wonderful but spreading ignorance, hate and lies about an innocent dog or anything else is dangerous.

Why does your shelter kill dogs using the heart stick method? This is cruel and inhumane to a dog unless they are comatose or sedated. There are many other humane ways that could be used if it has to be done. In most states there is normally more effort to adopt the animals into a better home. What is going on with your shelter?

  • Carol murphy

    Terry,
You are absolutely right. People need to get educated before instead of going off what other people say. In my opinion, a dogs are more loyal then most people that I know.
