Nat Geo to follow the Vicktory dogs

National Geographic have asked us if they can follow the progress of some of the Vicktory dogs in one or more episodes of Dogtown to be aired later this year.

The first three episodes of their new series about life at Best Friends Dogtown aired in January, and will re-air in March. Then, this summer, will come five new episodes, including at least one about the Vicktory dogs.

Darcy Dennett, the series producer was here earlier this week, filming the TV news crews who were filming the dogs for their evening news broadcasts. (I'm not sure she really knew I was going to post this! J )

On the left is Jeff Popowich, and on the right John Garcia – two of our ace dog experts, and in the middle Elissa Jones and Darcy. Elissa (left) runs the Best Friends Guardian Angel program for animals with special needs (she also happens to be married to Dr. Mike Dix, the Best Friends medical director), and has been coordinating the whole Dogtown series with Nat Geo and Darcy, who's now pretty much part of the family, so to speak, here at the sanctuary.

P.S. Note John's dress code for the day: A Best Friends T-shirt, with a Nat Geo jacket to help promote the dogs on the TV series!

Yay!!!!! Oh I was praying for this kind of pro-pittie exposure to the nation.  Perfect, and I know it will bring in viewers, too.  It would also be great to see one of the pitties needing more long-term attention to be featured as a GA dog.  Thank you.  And thank you to NatGeo!

Michael!  I am SO excited about the series Dogtown and the Vicktory dogs in particular.  As one of the "original dinosaurs" of Best Friends - (remember me, Julie, forum moderator for Dog Talk on the Time-Warner Pets Forum at CompuServe?)  I wanted to let you know that Best Friends has continued to be an inspiration to me as I finally established, with some great people, my rescue organization here in Texas.  We have several pitbulls here and one in particular is quite an ambassador for the breed. We are acutely aware of the plight of this breed.

I am so proud of Best Friends, of all that you have done for the animals, and perhaps one day I will get to visit out there again.  Tell Faith hello for me.  ;)

I was thrilled to learn Nat Geo would be back. I'm sure having a production crew there slows things down but the potential exposure for the sanctuary and the organization as a whole is incredible.  As I've written to Nat Geo, I really hope that this limited series leads to something larger and more long-term about BF in general. The potential subjects for a long-term series seem endless...the other areas at the sanctuary, the rescue missions far and wide, the legal issues being dealt with across the country, the adoptions....I know a big furry guy in Texas (rumored to be a Shepherd/Collie mix) named Jiminy who's ready for his follow-up story!

I can't wait for the series to return and know that only good can come from it!

I really wish you would drop the "K"

He is a piece of good for nothing trash.

Don`t label these dogs with his name.

I refer to these dogs as the dogs abused by M. PR!#K on my blog if need be.

I think you can guess at the 2 missing letters.

Victory dogs sounds good but please lose the "k"

I love the Dogtown series and I am beyond thrilled the the Victory dogs will have their moment in the lime light.  So much education is needed in relation to pit bulls and dog fighting...the consequences on both the human and animal sides.

Since I am Jiminy's mom, I'll speak for him (Jiminy said it was ok).

He loved Best Friends, he was very well taken care of, but nothing beats a forever home!

He has his own blog too, just search "Jiminy" and you'll find it. He writes it now and I add pictures.  he is so photogenic. He even has his picture with Michael Mountain.

About Michael Mountain

Michael Mountain is the President and one of the founders of Best Friends. He’s also editor of Best Friends magazine and the principal voice of Best Friends to our members – articulating the basic Best Friends message that kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. At home, Michael lives with a motley collection of otherwise “unadoptable” dogs and cats – like Pudgie, an old Sheltie who had lived for seven years on the end of a chain and was de-barked when he annoyed the neighbors. He enjoys hiking the back woods of Angel Canyon (the home of Best Friends) and the local national parks of the Southwest.
