Spending several weeks with these delightful creatures, a bit of whimsy strikes and a touch of giddiness – that these guys are actually safe and are beginning to "show up", so to speak.

I'm talking about what happens when dogs – any dogs – begin to come into their comfort zone. That's when their true personalities begin to emerge. They express quirky, silly traits that show off their individual uniqueness.

Given the forgiving nature of the dog and the fact that these particular pooches have faced such horrible abuse at the hand of man, I am always mystified by their resilience and loyalty.

As we spend more time with these guys, we get to know them as "cupcakes" – and other kinds of cakes, too. It's just a bit of fun, but they seem to enjoy it, too.

Our categories of cake so far are: cheesecake, beefcake, fruitcake and cupcake. Let's start with the cupcake

Cupcakes are the sweet and yummy ones. Who could I be talking about? Why, Little Red of course! She is soooooooo sweet and smiles a really big smile, and of course the more you egg her on, well, the more she smiles!

Behind her smile, imagining her possible past is hard. She is clearly scarred on the outside, and that leads me to believe she is possibly scarred on the inside as well. Her stature is small and she takes a little while to warm up to you. But once she does, look out! There is a lot of loving packed into her petite frame.

Sweet Little Red's teeth were once filed down, and that is another clue, coupled with the scarring, that perhaps she was used as a bait dog. Many times the bait dog is placed between the hungry dog chosen to fight and the food. Because her teeth are filed down, she is virtually defenseless as the villainous handler tries to create a blood lust in dogs who otherwise may have gotten along.

All I keep saying is she is safe now; no one will ever put her in that position again. She is now free to be the smiling little cupcake she was always meant to be.

And even though her teeth are filed, that does not stop her from gobbling up the treats!
