The story so far

We call them the Vicktory dogs.

They're the 22 dogs, rescued from ex-football star Michael Vick's infamous Bad Newz Kennels, who are now living at Best Friends. And now that the final court proceedings have been concluded, we can begin to introduce you to them.

On this blog, you can follow the progress of the Vicktory dogs.

Dr. Frank McMillan, Best Friends veterinarian and author of Unlocking the Secrets of the Animal Mind will be blogging about their health and behavior and what we're learning that will help other dogs who are rescued from fighting rings.

Others, like Patty Hegwood, our animal care director, will be writing about their behind-the-scene experiences with the dogs.

We'll also have regular "official" news updates in the Best Friends News section. To bring you up to date, some earlier reports include:

And over on the Best Friends Network, you can join in on the discussion of the much wider issue of how we can all help bring an end to the billion-dollar dog-fighting industry and help the millions of cast-off dogs who end up in shelters that have no means of caring for them.

Thank you SO much for all of the facts, explanations and links to related anti-BSL campaigns. I'm a recent/new member of our local anti-BSL organization here in Minnesota:  ARottaLovePlus. I'm so pleased that Best Friends is listing & providing links to ARLP all over the place. ARLP will have a presence at the upcoming mid-February "Pet Expo" here in the Twin Cities. BF's wonderful healing endeavors with the Vicktory Dogs, as well as the excellent "Dogtown" TV show, are all crucial information to share with the public. Prayers & Blessings!

There aren't enough years, in a human life, to experience this planet's fascinating

animals. At Tylertown, one little red Pit Bull got into my psyche and has been

home with me since then. He's taught me about who this breed is and who they can be in a healthy atmosphere with lots of love. What a gift that's been. Because

of him, I'm able to work with the Bully breeds at our local no-kill shelter and do all

I can to change other's uninformed opinions about this breed.

Thanks Best Friends and Little Redman.

They are wonderful dogs and make the most amazing pets!!  I've never owned or known one single pitbull that had a mean bone in it's body.  Hopefully soon, we can educate everyone that BSL aren't the solution.

just got back from best friends if you havn't gone you have to go it is the most wonderful place in the world. there is so much love there you wouldn't believe it. the first dog they gave me to work with was a pit bull i thought oh boy. she was a sweet heart. we kept having to stop on our walks because she either wanted a hug or her belly rubbed her name was Olivia. the whole place is like that.Olivea saw a deer run in front of us and she stopped looked back at me as if to say did you see that. every animal and person we came incontact with was amazing. All animal shelters need to be this way for the animals and for the people who love them

About Michael Mountain

Michael Mountain is the President and one of the founders of Best Friends. He’s also editor of Best Friends magazine and the principal voice of Best Friends to our members – articulating the basic Best Friends message that kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. At home, Michael lives with a motley collection of otherwise “unadoptable” dogs and cats – like Pudgie, an old Sheltie who had lived for seven years on the end of a chain and was de-barked when he annoyed the neighbors. He enjoys hiking the back woods of Angel Canyon (the home of Best Friends) and the local national parks of the Southwest.
